Butch’s officiating career started in 1998 when he became a USA Hockey official. From there, he became a full-time WCHA referee in 2003 and quickly became one of the most respected and exemplary officials in the game of hockey. Due to his tremendous abilities as a referee, Butch was able to officiate an NHL preseason game. This game would mark one of his largest achievements in the game of hockey.
As the league's only Native American referee, his NHL officials' sweater and skates are in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
To get a better idea of just how great of a referee Oliver “Butch” Mousseaux was, here is a personal story from Lucas Bisbee, one of his protégés.
May we all keep your big smile alive and wear it proud every day to continue your legacy. I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done for myself as well as everyone in this amazing hockey family. Butch was a tremendous official and mentor, a loving husband, and an amazing father to three marvelous children. He loved his family more than anything.
Some of Butch's greatest accomplishments include the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs, NCAA Frozen Four and the distinct honor of having his jersey in the Hockey Hall of Fame for being the only Native American to officiate a game in the National Hockey League. Butch truly accomplished nearly everything you can as an official.
Butch epitomized everything that is a hero. His Generosity was unmatched. Whether you needed equipment, skates, or most importantly-his time, he was there for us. He showed us all how to be Courageous in the face of adversity. He taught us all to Respect one another. Above all, he imparted his Wisdom upon all who he came in contact with.
The time he selflessly devoted to making myself, and everyone else around us, not only a better official - but a better person is unmatched. He helped me become the man I am today and has truly been an inspiration in the lives of countless others. From the first time he took me under his wing when I was 12 years old, Butchy has been fatherly and a big brother to me, to all of us.
Thank you for everything you have done Oliver Butch Mousseaux. The impact of your character and the reach of your person is something that will not be forgotten.
Words cannot express my gratitude nor the inspiration you have been to us all. May we all strive to be half the man that is you and may we all strive to leave the world a better place, just as you have done. From your thunderous laugh, to your booming voice, to your heart of gold, we love you Butchy - we will see you soon.
With his strong dedication to his community and the positive effect that he had in the lives of others, it’s easy to see why Oliver “Butch” Mousseaux is worthy of the honor of being inducted into the Superman Hall of Heroes.
